Yorkshire 2015: Bairstow reaps tour reward and sets sights on county success in all formats

He could have gone away and sulked in a corner or else rolled up his sleeves and scrapped.

Typically, he chose to scrap and has seen a splendid 2014 season at county level – followed by a splendid winter away with the England Lions – rewarded with a place on the Test tour to the West Indies.

“For me, there was no other way to react,” said Bairstow. “If you’re not with England, then you come back and do your damned best for Yorkshire.

“It’s a great club, and we’ve got a fantastic group of players and coaching staff, and it’s somewhere that I’ve grown up and really enjoyed playing.

“It’s not something where it’s a chore to come into the ground, it’s not somewhere that’s feared by any of the players to come in. We come in to enjoy ourselves and enjoy our jobs.

“With the history of the club and the signings that the club’s made and the statements that they’ve made with those signings, putting the floodlights up, changing a few bits, Dickie pumping the money in for the balcony, etc, there’s some big statements being made by the club and where we want to go.

“It’s great to be a part of it.”

Although Bairstow will be concentrating on England at present, he is relishing the chance to help Yorkshire build on last summer’s success.

He believes they can have a serious crack at every tournament.

“It would be amazing if we could win them all, but it only takes one bad day and you’re out of a competition,” he reflected.

“But the potential is there with the squad that we’ve got and with the guys that we’ve got coming through.

“We saw Jack Leaning last year in his first season and how well he did.

“The guys that are coming through are making serious contributions within the first team.”
