Yorkshire 2015: Gillespie concentrates on Yorkshire remit but Graves could easily come calling again

The county’s first-team coach, whose record at Headingley in three seasons reads one Championship promotion, a second-placed finish in Division One and then the Championship title last year, plus a runners-up finish in the T20 Cup and an appearance in the international Champions League, has been widely tipped as a possible England coach.

Indeed, if England make a pig’s ear of their current tour to the West Indies, it would be no surprise if the new England and Wales Cricket Board chief Colin Graves – the man who appointed Gillespie at Yorkshire in 2011 – came knocking on his door.

Either way, it can only be a matter of time before the former Australia fast bowler gets the chance to test his coaching skills at the highest level. For now, Gillespie is focusing solely on his job at Yorkshire, which he enjoys immensely, as the club look to build on last year’s success.

“I’m flattered that people have linked my name (to international jobs) but I’m fully committed to Yorkshire,” said Gillespie.

“The county has given me a great opportunity and I want to repay that faith. I really enjoy my job, my family’s very settled, and I feel that we’ve still got a lot of work to do at the club going forward.

“We’ve done well in the Championship and managed to win that trophy, but we’ve under-achieved in the shorter forms and I’d like to be a part of that process to help us win some one-day silverware.”

Gillespie is confident England can bounce back in the Caribbean after a poor World Cup which saw them eliminated before the knock-out stages.

“England are hurting and it’s a different form of the game now with the Tests coming up,” he said.

“I think they’ll do well.”
