The 26-year-old pace bowler, who has not played for a month after a side injury suffered in the opening game of the season at Durham, took 5-18 from 13.2 overs in a masterful exhibition at Emerald Headingley.

Coad was well-supported by Matt Fisher (3-29) and Duanne Olivier (2-49) as Yorkshire dismissed their opponents for 124 after winning the toss.

Resuming on 52-4 after lunch, Leicestershire added seven runs before Coad drew Rishi Patel forward and had him caught at second slip by Yorkshire’s acting captain Adam Lyth.

Coad struck again to have Arron Lilley lbw for five before Fisher had Ben Mike taken at second slip by Harry Brook, one ball after Mike had pulled Fisher for six towards the East Stand.

Harry Swindells produced some defiance, striking Olivier for three successive fours, but the wickets continued to tumble as Dieter Klein edged Olivier to Brook at third slip.

Coad rounded off the innings with successive deliveries, Swindells edging behind for the top score of 36 and Alex Evans caught low down at second slip by Lyth.

The vistors were given a significant boost inside the first three overs of the Yorkshire reply after tea, with Alex Evans and Klein removing Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Adam Lyth as Yorkshire slipped to four for two.

Kohler-Cadmore was caught at square-leg by Sam Evans and Lyth edged behind to Swindells.

Will Fraine and Tom Loten, 11 and seven, steadied the ship before rain forced the players off the field and brought a premature end to an absorbing day’s play.

Umpires Peter Hartley and James Middlebrook abandoned the day at 5.20pm.
