It took just under a session for Yorkshire to wrap up their fourth win of the season after Middlesex were bowled out for 219 on the final day in their second innings, having resumed on 137 for four after following on.

Yorkshire’s openers, Adam Lyth and Alex Lees, had seven minutes available to them before lunch to knock off the five runs required for victory.

The 22-point win arrived from the fourth ball of the fourth over of the short second innings as Lyth drove Joe Denly’s part-time leg spin through extra cover for four.

John Simpson added only a single to his overnight score before becoming the first wicket to fall on the final day.

The wicketkeepeer-batsman was caught for 21 by Rich Pyrah at silly mid-off after fatally checking a drive off Steven Patterson’s bowling in the fourth over of the morning.

Middlesex then slipped to 155 for six when Neil Dexter, who had batted well to reach 36, was spectacularly yorked by an inswinger from Ryan Sidebottom, who uprooted both middle and leg stumps.

Ollie Rayner did not last long when he was trapped in front by Liam Plunkett for a duck, but from 167 for seven, Gareth Berg and James Harris fashioned a little bit of resistance before the end came.

Berg struck some defiant blows in his 38 before driving Rashid straight to Pyrah at short extra cover. That came soon after Harris had also departed, lbw for 14, after playing around a straight ball from fast bowler Patterson.

Final pair Tim Murtagh and Corey Collymore eked out the handful of runs needed to make Yorkshire bat again, but Collymore then drove a return catch to Rashid on five.

It is Yorkshire’s first win at Lord’s since 1987, although they had not played at the ground since 1998, and was the first time since 1968 that they had enforced the follow-on against Middlesex.
