Yorkshire Leagues: York spin twins too wily for Harrogate

Harrogate had drawn level with York on points seven days earlier, when Driffield inflicted a first defeat of the season on the holders, but Harrogate, without Andy Laws, George Ross and Ollie Driver, bowed to the spin of Dan Woods and Tom Pringle and the batting of Jack Leaning and Ryan McKendry.

Woods and Pringle restricted Harrogate to 167 all out in 50.4 overs. Then Leaning and McKendry shared an unbroken fourth-wicket partnership of 133, Leaning smashing 19 fours in his 109 and McKendry supporting with 35 as York cruised to their target in 30 overs. It was Harrogate’s turn to suffer their first defeat of the campaign.

Third-placed Yorkshire Academy defeated visitors Scarborough by seven runs, aided by three run-outs, John Shaw’s fine 61 and 41 from No 9 Jarred Warner.

Fresh from taking York’s scalp, Driffield completed a seventh successive win in league and cup with a two-wicket success at Doncaster. Replying to 173 all out, Driffield were in trouble at 44-5 but Danny Broumpton and Nick Hardgrave added 83 for the sixth wicket, Broumpton finishing on 58 not out. Hardgrave, who made 40, had earlier spun his way to 6-31. James Stuart hit 44 and took 6-49 in vain for Doncaster.

Opener Nick Gaywood and veteran captain Matt Dixon took the honours for Sheffield Collegiate, who won the derby at Sheffield United by eight wickets. Gaywood made an unbeaten 76 and spinner Dixon took 5-39.

Castleford opener Brayden Clarke included 14 boundaries in his century but his side lost to Cleethorpes by 57 runs at Savile Park, captain and leg-spinner Alex Osmond taking 6-42 and making a half-century for the winners.

David Barwick included 12 fours and a six in an undefeated 105 for Hull but visitors Appleby Frodingham squeezed home by one wicket.

Opener Matthew Wilson’s 78 helped Barnsley to a three-wicket win over Rotherham Town.

Holliday’s rapid blast helps Methley climb

CONOR Harvey hit an unbeaten 118 as Townville retained top spot in the Premier Division by ending Birstall’s six-match winning league run.

Harvey and Kristian Ward (44) led the way as Townville overhauled Birstall’s 246-8 that included an undefeated 80 by Eric Austin.

Methley climbed to second when Chris Holliday struck 79 off 71 balls to steer them to a three-wicket win at Carlton, who were undermined from 115-2 to 149 all out by Marcus Walmsley (3-25) and Matthew Waite (3-26).

Wrenthorpe’s hopes of lifting the title for a fourth successive year were hit by their third defeat in four league games.

They lost by 104 runs to Wakefield Thornes, who maintained their title bid by repeating their recent Heavy Woollen Cup victory. Johannes Bothma claimed 4-27 as Wrenthorpe were bowled out for 157, replying to 261-7 that featured an unbeaten century by David Toft and 66 from Matthew Jordan.

Altofts eased their relegation worries when Ismail Patel (55), Steve Palmer (37no) and James Logan (36) guided them to a four-wicket success against fellow strugglers Ossett, whose defeat was tough on all-rounder Khalid Usman (62 and 4-31).

Hunslet Nelson’s slide continued with a 112-run loss at Batley, for whom Tariq Hussain bagged 6-34 and Chinnada Rudramurthy hit 50 and claimed 4-45.

David Winn (50) and Adil Raza (31 and 5-35) shone for Mirfield Parish Cavaliers in a 107-run victory against winless bottom side Northowram Fields.

Division One leaders Scholes won a low-scoring game against Buttershaw St Paul’s. Ross Irving (5-12), Joe Duffy (2-23) and Mohammed Sharafat (2-13) routed Buttershaw for 71 after Dominic Cumming (51) had led Scholes to 131.

Chris Scott hammered an unbeaten century as Hopton Mills made 283-5 at Ossett, who were toppled for 139 by Carroll (3-31) and Richard Myers (3-42).

Oulton revived their bid by beating Wakefield St Michael’s.

Gould blazes to new record with 16 sixes

Richard Gould hit the highest score in Bradford League history when he made 218 for Gomersal in their 237-run win over Great Horton in Division Two.

Gould hit 16 sixes and 19 fours as he beat by four runs the previous record which was set by Azam Khan for Hartshead Moor against Ben Rhydding in 1990 and equalled just two weeks ago by Windhill’s Fakhar Hussain – also against Great Horton.

Gould was joined in an opening stand of 198 by Andy Gorrod, who hit 79 as Gomersal made 374-4 before dismissing their opponents for 137.

Baildon are off the bottom of Division One after a 21-run win over East Bierley. Tom Webb 
(5-47) and Mushtaq Ahmed 
(3-21) helped bowl out Bierley for 157 despite 80 from Neil Gill. Baildon’s 178-7 was built around Gharib Razak (40), Vaibhav Naik (36) and Tom Webb (31no).

Morley are bottom after an eight-wicket defeat by Lightcliffe; Morley were dismissed for 136 with Warwickshire’s Oliver Hannon-Dalby taking 3-21. Lightcliffe cruised to victory with Oliver Robinson (64no) and Chris Taylor (44no) sharing an unbroken third-wicket stand of 106.

Zarak Khan’s 106 and 77 from Adal Islam saw Manningham Mills post 276 before bowling out Pudsey Congs for 203 with Zeeshan Qasim taking 5-57. Mubtada Akhtar made an unbeaten 66 for Congs.

Cleckheaton opener Tim Jackson made 120 as his side beat Bradford & Bingley by 197 runs.

Jackson and Ammar Mahmood (60) shared a second-wicket stand of 136 as Cleckheaton made 192-4 before dismissing Bradford & Bingley for 95.

Pudsey St Lawrence picked up 20 points for a 183-run win over lowly Saltaire. Left-armer Craig Wiseman took 6-45 as Saltaire were bowled out for 125 in reply to 308-5. The St Lawrence total included half-centuries from opener Adam Waite (93), James Smith (84), Matthew Duce (56) and Chris Marsden (50no).

Leaders Woodlands continued on their winning ways with a 63-run victory over Hanging Heaton. Grant Soames made 65 in Woodlands’ total of 226-9.
