Dettori given another suspension after his win with Rewilding

Frankie Dettori proved he is still the undisputed master of Royal Ascot after pulling off a shock victory in the day-two highlight.

But there was a massive sting in the tale for Dettori as he picked up a nine-day suspension for using his whip with excessive frequency as he rode Rewilding – last year’s beaten St Leger favourite – to an epic Prince of Wales’s Stakes win for Godolphin.

The Italian maestro played to the crowd, replicating sprinter Usain Bolt’s bow and arrow celebration before his trademark flying dismount.

However, the stewards found the Italian hit Rewilding 24 times inside the final two furlongs and he will now miss the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown on July 2.

It is the second lengthy ban incurred by Dettori in the space of a few weeks after he was suspended for 10 days for not riding out to the line on Blue Bunting in the Oaks at Epsom, being narrowly denied third place as a result. That suspension starts tomorrow, and he will also be banned from June 29 to July 7.

The jockey’s 45th winner at Royal Ascot, a modern-day record, saw Rewilding only overhaul the supposed Australian superstar So You Think, the 4-11 odds-on favourite, in the final strides after Dettori had gone into overdrive up the home straight.

The rider is looking to prolong his association with Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin operation by concentrating on the major races as 19-year-old Derby-winning jockey Mikael Barzalona continues his apprenticeship.

Next month’s King George at Ascot could now be on Rewilding’s radar followed by the Champion Stakes in the autumn.

While Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien took personal responsibility for Ballydoyle’s So You Think failing to see the trip under Ryan Moore, Dettori’s electrifying brilliance saw him overhaul the favourite.

“It was a tremendous gallop with two great horses. It was sheer joy to be in the race,” said Dettori whose 17-2 mount came to prominence by winning the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York last August before failing to stay in the St Leger.

“I’m delighted for Rewilding as he doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. He showed his true colours (yesterday).”

Winning trainer Mahmood Zarooni was quick to pay tribute to Sheikh Mohammed for suggesting that Rewilding was dropped back in trip. He said: “I have to be honest, it is not me, it’s him. He always gives us instructions on how to deal with horses. From training them, to feeding them and everything.”

Tom Queally believes Frankel still had plenty left in the tank in Tuesday’s St James’s Palace Stakes and that the unbeaten colt will stay 10 furlongs.

The jockey’s confident reaction suggests that York’s Juddmonte International could be the next target for Sir Henry Cecil’s unbeaten colt.

“He settled well and I think we can ride him differently now. I am not sure what his target is, but the owner Prince Khalid Abdullah is keen to win the Juddmonte International, and I think he’ll stay 10 furlongs no problem,” said Queally.
