Dinnington stretch leaders to limit

Yorkshire One: Leaders Malton and Norton ran in six tries, including the first and last of the game, but twice had to fight from behind at Dinnington to secure their 21st win from 23 matches.

Malton went ahead in the first two minutes with the first of two tries by centre Ryan Lonsdale but Dinnington, who are next to bottom, edged 7-5 ahead when winger David Longstaff raced over and Danny Wilkinson converted.

Malton flanker George Harrison put Malton back in front with a try midway through the first half, but Dinnington turned round 12-10 ahead when second-row Paul Mitchell strolled over on 42 minutes.

Lonsdale again put Malton ahead when he scored his second try within a minute of the restart, and they were 29-12 in front before Longstaff scored his second try for Dinnington, Wilkinson converting from in front of the posts. It was in the third minute of stoppage time that Malton winger Tom Newitt evaded several tackles to run in his third try of the match.

Sheffield, with two games in hand, maintained second place and matched Malton’s bonus point when they scored four tries in a 38-31 win at bottom-club Bradford Salem.

Centre Joe Cribley, winger Tom Metcalfe, flanker Martin Balshaw and prop Tommy Marples scored Sheffield’s tries.

Salem also clinched a four-try bonus point as well as a losing bonus with wing forward Damian Pearson, flanker Chris Fisher, winger Guy Willows and a forwards’ try.

Heath notched eight tries in a 54-13 home win over Knottingley.

North Ribblesdale, after turning round 36-0 down, fought back with four second-half tries – two by centre John Moimoi - but were defeated 36-26 at Castleford.

Bridlington won their derby 26-18 against Scarborough at Dukes Park.

Yorkshire Two: Pocklington were denied a four-try bonus point but consolidated their decisive lead when they won 20-5 at Ripon while Huddersfield YMCA, in second position, were beaten 25-17 at third-placed Barnsley.

Pocklington went 13-0 ahead at half-time with tries by full-back Nick Bennett and second-row Ed Bean, and a penalty by Bennett. Ripon pulled back a try by scrum-half Robin Nicholson, but Bennett ran in his second after a good run by flanker Karl Durkin.

Pocklington lost No 8 Matthew Davies with a broken ankle midway through the first half.

Barnsley, who have won seven consecutive matches, moved to within four points of their rivals when they scored three tries to one against Huddersfield YMCA at Shaw Lane.

YMCA had gone ahead with a try by centre Adam Ryder, converted by James Swift, but Barnsley turned round 17-7 ahead after two tries by No 8 David Reed, both converted by Andrew Appleyard, and a penalty by Appleyard.

Swift and Appleyard exchanged penalties before Barnsley flanker Joe South scored an unconverted try, and the visitors had the last word when full-back Chris Beever crashed over and Swift converted.

Yarnbury maintained fourth place with a 14-3 home win over Doncaster Phoenix.

Yarnbury scored all their points with the wind on their backs in the first half, Ian Bartlett converting tries by wing forward Richard Longstaff and centre Jason Avison.

Phoenix pulled back a penalty by Dan Storey, and although Yarnbury had 80 per cent of the pressure in the second half, they were unable to convert their advantage into further points.

Leodiensians, previously just one place ahead of their rivals, moved clear when they ran in six tries to one in a 46-16 victory at West Leeds.

Yorkshire Three: Runaway leaders Wath took their winning sequence to 21 matches but were restricted to five tries in their 31-0 win at ninth-placed York RI.

Wath turned round 14-0 ahead, winger Ben Keen scoring the first try which he converted and then converting a try by back-row forward Joe Earp.

Earp scored the opening try of the second half, and RI had players in the sin-bin when centre Steve Mason and Keen scored the last two tries.

Baildon maintained second place with a 29-19 home win over Northallerton.

Prop Peter Lowth, second-row Danny Collard, flanker Johnny Picken and wingers David Hemming and Hayden Lister shared Baildon’s five tries.

Goole, in third place, ran in 13 tries to one in a 79-8 home victory over Old Modernians.

Fourth-placed Bramley Phoenix moved further clear of their rivals with a 21-10 home win over Rotherham Phoenix, and Aireborough moved to within a point of Rotherham when they romped to a 54-5 win at bottom-club Old Otliensians.
