Dobson sure Hull KR can cure their away-day blues

THERE is no science or psychology required to break Hull KR's winless run on the road.

While some people may study hard to discover the cause of their travel sickness and leave no stone unturned in seeking out a remedy, those at the heart of the matter already know where they are slipping up.

And it is because of that, as the East Yorkshire club aim to avoid a fifth successive defeat away from Craven Park tonight, scrum-half Michael Dobson insists there remains a reassured calmness about their plans ahead of the visit to Huddersfield.

"It's our discipline," the Australian told the Yorkshire Post. "We just seem to be struggling a bit with that. It's the penalties away from home that have killed us.

"I'm not sure why it happens on our travels so much. You could say you struggle to get the calls going your way when you are away from home. Maybe those 50:50 decisions don't go in your favour as much. But we know if we play well, we will win at Huddersfield."

There is substance to Dobson's belief. Coach Justin Morgan was scathing about some of the decisions that went against his side in defeat to Warrington less than a fortnight ago.

Equally so, Rovers lost at

St Helens after being down to 11 men at one point with two players controversially stuck in the sin bin for debatable offences.

To a lesser extent, Jake Webster's red card at Odsal played its part in their mauling by Bradford and it was the forced reduction in numbers that proved crucial against Warrington with Dobson recalling: "We were going well there until Clint Newton got sin-biined.

"We were right in it. We've been in a lot of the games competing recently and just not been able to get over the line.

"We had a couple of players yellow-carded at St Helens as well and ended up losing that one but we'll be taking those positives going to Huddersfield."

Despite their woeful journeying – Rovers even had their bus break down on the way to St Helens – they remain in the top eight due to their recently prolific form on home turf.

The comprehensive 42-6 rout of Harlequins on Sunday, in which Dobson scored two tries and regularly carved open the Londoners, was their fourth win on the trot at Craven Park.

It is such performances, full of power, pace and authority, that have left Morgan believing they are capable of advancing a lot further.

"He hasn't said anything about the away form but he doesn't need to; we know we need to cut our the errors and get our discipline spot on," says Dobson, whose own influence on the side remains as crucial as ever given his kicking dominance and creative spark (only Castleford's Rangi Chase betters his 15 try assists).

"We have spoken more about going on a run now and stringing together three or four wins on the bounce. This league's really open and we're pretty confident if we can do that we can still make the top four."

It was last season when Rovers stunned the competition by finishing fourth with Dobson one of four players – Ben Galea, Newton and Peter Fox being the others – to make Super League's Dream Team.

They have struggled to maintain the levels of 2009 but that is possibly a sign they over-achieved last season.

Likewise, tonight's opponents, the other surprise package of last year having ended the season third, have also toiled in their attempt to continue at that rate of progression.

Huddersfield have fortified their squad with the signings of Danny Brough, Lee Gilmour and David Fa'alogo but – currently sitting two points above Rovers in sixth following some mixed form themselves – have seen no instant rewards

However, their spirited fightback against Hull FC, recovering from an 18-0 deficit to overcome Rovers' city rivals 32-18 at the Galpharm last Sunday, pointed to a potentially decisive shift in their own fortunes and they too are keen to press on.

"We've played Huddersfield twice this year and they have had the says over us both those times," said Dobson, having been vanquished 30-0 at home in February and suffered a demoralising Challenge Cup fourth-round exit at the Galpharm two months later.

"That cup game was disappointing. We knew we could have performed better that day and it didn't work out but we've moved on.

"Huddersfield will be tough again though. It's a bit surprising they are down in sixth.

"I thought they'd be higher than that but we know if we stick to what we've discussed we'll be able to get a win."

Although not winning at an opposition ground since thrashing Harlequins on Easter Monday, Rovers have already picked up one historic success this term, their triumph over champions Leeds a first at Headingley since 1985.

Dobson, 24, adds: "We've shown we can beat any team on our day and it's about getting that consistency.

"I don't think we've been too far off and our form over the last five weeks has been pretty solid.

"It was a good victory over Quins last week but we're not getting too carried away and know we'll probably face a lot tougher test against Huddersfield. But we're also confident about the ability we have in this side."
