Double delight for Cochrane at Yorkshire Show

ANOTHER memorable Great Yorkshire Show was held last week in Harrogate with many successes for Yorkshire owners and riders.

The cob championship went to Jack Cochrane from Worksop riding the six-year-old gelding Hallmark IX by Welcome Flagmount which took the lightweight section and owned by Rosemary Hetherington from Middleham.

The reserve went to Jayne Webber riding Carol Bardo's seven-year-old heavyweight winner The Keystone Cop.

Cochrane went on to win the new Top of the North Supreme Ridden Championship with Hallmark 1X. He also produced the reserve champion, Victoria Clayton's small hunter, Sir William John.

The riding pony breeding section was judged by Lady Margaret Benton Jones, a former chair of NPS and owner of the Daldorn Stud. The championship went to Alan Charlesworth showing the three-year-old Scallywag 11 by Kilvington Scoundrel out of Bronze Bubble owned by John Thomas.

Scallywag took the overall young stock championship ahead of Borrowby's Craig Elenor showing Pam Gilfillan's yearling Grindles Zodiac by Lechlade Quince and also had a second with Lesley Bishop-Milnes' three-year-old Wayfaring Song by Ninfield Millionaire.

The overall reserve champion was Suzanna Welby's 10-year-old Ainthorpe Countess by Willowbay Symphony out of Ainthorpe Elegant Princess bred by Derrick Champion from Goathland, near Whitby, produced by Suzanna's daughter Zinnia and shown by John Hughes.

The foal championship went to Anneleise Stonehouse with the 10-year-old colt foal Woodend Jackanory by Lechlade Quince out of Woodend Garnet bred by Margo Wardropper.

The Dartmoor Ponies section was judged by John Jordan from Devon and his choice was Lincolnshire's Gaynor Rossall and Neil Wright's six-year-old brood mare Treworgan Serenase by Hisley Cravat who also won the stallion section with their five-year-old Treworgan Sandpiper.

The reserve champion honours went to Nicola, Philip and Katy Tyler's five-year-old Springwater Country Love by Moortown Countryman.

The Tylers also took the two-three-year-old section with the two-year-old Springwater Bridget.

Second in this section was Sue Hide with her home-bred three-year-old Hutton Ambo Country Star ahead of Easingwold's Margaret Furness and Nicola Shuttleworth's two-year-old filly Pumphill Cascade by last year's HOYS winner Pumphill Bennett.

The foal section was won by Chris Farnaby from Todmorden with Valepark Funtime.

The Dales Ponies championship was won by Freda and Richie Longstaff from Middleton in Teesdale having their first outing of the season with their 13-year-old brood mare Lowhouses Rebecca by Ashwood Black Prince.

The reserve went to Glenis Cockbain from Cumbria with the three-year-old Trebarl Mary Jane.

The overall fell ponies championship went to Hayley Martin from Rawtenstall with the six-year-old stallion Wellbro Black Jack by Heltondale Mountain Mist bred by Andrew Thorpe from Shawforth.

And finally the riddeen mountain and moorland category was judged by Diane Jordan from Devon and Tweety Nimmo from Scotland.

The champion was York's Sophie Burkin riding the nine-year-old Connemara gelding Silver Rebel by Oxlin Mairlin.

Scottish rider Christopher Grant took reserve with the 10-year-old Highland mare Dunedin Rhuann and won the strongest class of 35 forward from the 43 entries in the Fells, Dales & Highland section ahead of Hayley Martin riding Welbro Black Jack.

Emma Boardman won the Exmoor section for the third year running riding Susan Rawstorn's seven-year-old stallion Phi.
