Eagles earn late bonus but Rooney holds key to Barrow win

Sheffield Eagles 26 Barrow Raiders 36championshipSHEFFIELD Eagles' play-off hopes suffered a setback as they went down to a second league defeat to Barrow Raiders.

The Eagles were level at half-time but after the break had no answer to the skills of half-back Jamie Rooney.

A last-minute try salvaged a bonus point for the Eagles on their return to Don Valley Stadium with Bramall Lane's pitch being re-seeded.

Prop Mitch Stringer blasted over for the first try with winger Tim Bergin adding the goal.

Bergin added a penalty but Barrow came back with former Eagles back row Martin Ostler forcing his way over and a touchdown from centre Liam Harrison followed by Rooney's goal gave Barrow the lead.

Winger Andy Ballard's try and Rooney's goal stretched the Raiders' lead but on half-time Matty Brooks made a 30m break before sending full-back Misi Taulapapa in for the try and Bergin's goal levelled at 14-14.

Barrow re-took the lead soon after the restart with a try from Chris Young converted by Rooney but Eagles' full-back Misi Taulapapa crossed and Bergin added the two points.

LEEDS Rhinos have been hit by a triple injury blow with international trio Brent Webb, Kylie Leuluai and Matt Diskin set to miss up to six weeks of action.

Kiwi full-back Webb and Samoan prop Leuluai have both torn ankle ligaments, the latter in last week's loss against Crusaders, while scans have confirmed Diskin tore a groin muscle during the win at Harlequins.

They will each be sidelined for between four and six weeks, missing Leeds's trip to high-flying Warrington on Sunday, as well as other key Super League games against St Helens, Hull KR and Huddersfield and, potentially, the Challenge Cup semi-final against Saints on August 7.
