England hang on to seal early place in last four

BARRY MIDDLETON admitted he was stunned to have led England to the semi-finals of the World Cup after a 3-2 victory over hosts India sent them through to the last four with a game to spare.

Victories in their first four games mean England are into the last four, but they had to withstand a fierce fightback from India.

James Tindall's 16th-minute strike gave England a 1-0 lead at half-time.

Ashley Jackson struck twice after the break but goals from Singh Chandi and Rajpal Singh meant England were hanging on at the end.

England play Spain today in their last group match.

"It hasn't really sunk in yet," said Doncaster-born captain Middleton. "Reaching the semi-finals is unbelievable. That was one of the best games I've ever been involved in and I'm just so proud of our players."

Head coach Jason Lee – who set a pre-season target of reaching the last four – added: "It's a fantastic achievement for this group.

"They've worked so hard to achieve it and fully deserve a place in the semi-finals.

"They had to dig deep and it was a gutsy second-half display but the team spirit within this group is obvious to see.

"We're very pleased for the players."
