Ennis in the medals at Don Valley

Jessica Ennis won two events and was runner-up in a third at the Yorkshire and Humberside Track and Field Championships at Don Valley at the weekend.

On the first day she won the 100m beating defending champion Louise Bloor (Stretford). Conditions were cold and windy and there was a strong head wind keeping the winning time down to a modest 12.10secs although Ennis had run faster in the first round.

Conditions were better on the second day when Ennis won the long jump. She jumped 6.29m with her third-round effort and had a competent rather than top-class series. Again Rotherham-based Bloor was runner up with 5.99m.

Earlier in the day, Ennis threw 13.82m for second place in the shot behind her Sheffield team- mate Amy Hill (14.05m) who was battling with a shoulder injury.

Ennis has a busy few weeks ahead, beginning with a straight 150m in Manchester next week, three events at Loughborough the following week before a heptathlon in Austria.

Her progress is on target for the European Championships in Barcelona at the end of July.

Bloor finally struck gold in one of the last events of the meeting, retaining her 200m title in 24.75secs.

In the men's events there was a double for Sheffield's Matthew Quine.

He won the 400m on the first day in 48.67secs and then took the 200m in a personal best of 21.85m on the second day. In the shorter event he beat his Sheffield team-mate Tod Marshall who had earlier won the 100m. Marshall, therefore, was unable to repeat his double of last year.

Matt Lambley (Sheffield) beat his own Yorkshire record in winning the hammer, his winning throw of 69.89m being close to his personal best.

Leeds City's Daniel Gardiner won the long jump (7.14m) and was a medallist in the discus and javelin while Sheffield's Steve Garret won the 400m hurdles in 53.26secs as well as placing third in both the high hurdles and the 200m.

In the women's hammer, former Spenborough athlete Sarah Holt (Sale) set new figures of 60.82m beating former Leeds athlete Hannah Evenden (Edinburgh) who won the discus (42.97m) and was third in the shot.

Kenyan duo Eliud Kiptanui and Helena Kirop both shattered the course records on their way to victory at the Prague Marathon.

Kiptanui, in only his second ever marathon, roared to a very impressive time of two hours five minutes 39 seconds, while Kirop came home in 2hr 25min 29sec.
