Fallon and York's winning formula

Summit Surge was the recipient of a masterful ride by Kieren Fallon to clinch an 8-1 victory in the SkyBet York Stakes in front of a record modern-day crowd of 42,586 on Knavesmire on Saturday.

Held up in the rear, Fallon watched on as Monitor Closely set an even gallop, before switching to the stands rail inside the final two furlongs and showing a good turn of foot to stay on past Bushman for a length-and-a-quarter victory.

"I've been dying to run him over further and fast ground is what he needs," said winning trainer Luca Cumani.

"He showed a nice turn of foot. We took him out to Dubai and he ran well on turf but didn't like the Tapeta surface.

"There's the Rose Of Lancaster next for him I think but the ground would have to be fast, which it very rarely is at Haydock."

The record crowd nudged ahead of the 2007 John Smith's Cup day and capped a two-day meeting which saw 68,000 visitors to Knavesmire.

James Brennan, head of marketing at York, said: "We were blessed with Yorkshire sunshine and are delighted that the combination of top quality racing, investment in facilities and the added entertainment of the music performances by Madness and the Stars from the X Factor proved to be a winning formula."

Fallon notched a quickfire double in taking the Sky Bet Dash aboard Hawkeyethenoo (7-1).

Frankie Dettori profited from Michael Hills' traffic problems by taking the mount on the Barry Hills-trained Face The Problem in the Skypoker.com Nursery, scoring by an impressive length-and-a-quarter on the 7-4 favourite.

The Sir Alex Ferguson-owned colt showed excellent dash from the stalls and stayed on despite going left-handed.

Destinys Dream (8-1) stayed on well under Andrew Mullen to take the Skybet.com E.B.F Fillies' Handicap.

It was trainer Tracy Waggott's biggest win and she was thrilled with the tough five-year-old's victory. She said: "She only just gets the mile-and-a-half at Doncaster so a drop in trip was ideal."

Richard Fahey's newcomer Common Touch (15-8) took the Skyvegas.com Median Auction Maiden Stakes under championship-leading jockey Paul Hanagan.

In a cracking finish, Wicked Daze was seen at his best winning the SkyBet Supporting The Yorkshire Racing Summer Festival Handicap for Linda Perratt.

Smarty Socks (4-1) produced a good turn of foot to take the Skybingo.com Stakes under Silvestre de Sousa, who picked up a three-day ban in the process.

Harbinger is just even-money with William Hill for the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe after providing Sir Michael Stoute with his fifth success in the Betfair-sponsored King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot.

The Highclere Thoroughbred-owned four-year-old stepped up to the plate on his first outing in Group One company and pulverised his five rivals with an 11-length triumph under Olivier Peslier.

Stoute's pacemaker Confront led until the home turn, at which point Epsom Derby hero Workforce and Irish Derby winner Cape Blanco tried to assert their authority.

But they were merely sitting ducks for Harbinger (4-1) who effortlessly took up the running inside the final two furlongs and rocketed clear.

Cape Blanco was left to pick up the pieces in second with Youmzain finishing third, French raider Daryakana fourth and Workforce a disappointing fifth.

Stoute said: "Olivier was just cantering, he travelled so well and he was looking good from a long way out.

"It is no shock that he has won. He had a huge chance, but the manner in which he did it was very pleasing. We will get him back on the training ground and see how he is, but I am sure Highclere will have something to say about his future and we''ll consider the Arc."
