Angry Carlos Carvalhal loses cool over Sheffield Wednesday contract talks

The Owls head coach – who has orchestrated back-to-back Championship play-off campaigns since arriving at Hillsborough – refused to answer questions about the length of his Owls contract. Before last season’s play-off final defeat to Hull City, the Portuguese coach revealed he had signed a three-year deal.

But speaking on Sheffield Live – an online television channel – on Thursday evening, Carvalhal claimed his current deal ends this summer.

Attending yesterday’s usual pre-match media duties at the club’s Middlewood Road training ground – ahead of tomorrow’s final game of the regular season against Fulham – Carvalhal opened up by insisting he would not talk about his future.

But, asked to clarify his comments on Portuguese radio this week about extending his Owls contract – followed by the Sheffield Live interview – an unhappy Carvalhal insisted he would not discuss the issue further, and even threatened to leave the press conference if faced with further questions on his future.

“I will not answer about my personal life,” said Carvalhal. “Last season was the same questions, and the focus to me must go to the team, not myself. I am not important, Sheffield Wednesday is important.

“I want everyone to focus on their work, not on myself. I answered (the question) yesterday in the interview, it is public what I said.

“Everything is calm, quiet, everything is happy. I want everyone to focus on the Fulham game.

“It is a situation I don’t want to talk about in this press conference, I want to talk about Sheffield Wednesday, we have achieved the play-offs. We have a lot of good things to talk about. My situation is not a problem, I don’t want to talk about it. I can decide whether I talk about my personal life or not.”

Carvalhal – who yesterday was named the Championship’s manager of the month – snapped: “If you don’t change the conversation, I leave. Really, I will leave.”
