The 27-year-old left Hull City upon the expiration of his contract and was delighted when he heard of the Millers' interest.

The former Barnsley player held a Zoom meeting with manager Warne before agreeing to join the South Yorkshire club - a call which furthered his desire to sign a contract at the AESSEAL New York Stadium.

He has already joined up with his new teammates, with Rotherham's Championship campaign set to kick off on September 12.

"I am fully up for the task ahead and dedicated to the cause,” said MacDonald.

“If that means buying into the ethos of the manager and the way that the club is then that is what I'm about.

"As soon as the call came in that Rotherham were interested, it was definitely something I was really happy about.

"It was a really positive Zoom call and from the minute I came off it, I knew what the manager was about and what the club was about and it was definitely something that I wanted to buy into."

MacDonald made five appearances for Hull in the final part of the prolonged 2019-20 Championship campaign.

It was the first time the defender had returned to the pitch after being diagnosed with bowel cancer in August 2019.

Although the season finished on a sour note, with Hull suffering relegation to League One, MacDonald was delighted to get back on the field.

"For me personally, it was nice to get back out there and get back on the pitch,” he added.

"I almost didn't really want the break - it was so good being back out on the pitch.

"I know it was a disappointing time for me and the players at Hull because we got relegated but it was almost like I didn't really need that break and I just wanted to go straight back and carry on playing."
