Barnsley 1 Chesterfield 2: Adam Hammill's strike raises false hope for Reds

Chesterfield spoiled Barnsley's Johnstone's Paint Trophy winning homecoming party and dented their hosts' play-off hopes with this win at Oakwell.

Ollie Banks netted what proved the winner with nine minutes remaining, by which time Chesterfield had been educed to 10 men.

The match had remained goalless until the 57th minute when the Spireites finally broke the deadlock.

Lee Novak reacted well to head home a deflected cross, but Paul Heckingottom’s side levelled through Wembley match-winner Adam Hammill with 15 minutes to go.

Unlike his superb solo effort in the JPT final, Hammill needed a bit of help as his shot found the corner of the net via a slight deflection.

The Spireites were reduced to 10 men shortly after when Jamal Campbell-Ryce was sent off after being shown a second yellow card.

But in spite of the numerical disadvantage they went on to snatch victory when Banks tapped home Ariyibi’s cross.

Marc Roberts went close to snatching an equaliser and a point for the Reds late on but his shot struck a post.

Defeat in their first league game since winning the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy means Barnsley are now six points off the League One play-off positions.

Chesterfield, meanwhile, have opened up a four-point gap between themselves and the relegation places.
