Barnsley 1 Portsmouth 0: Hammill wins Robins praise

BARNSLEY manager Mark Robins hailed Adam Hammill as the midfielder's solitary goal guided his team to a 1-0 victory against Portsmouth as the Tykes moved to 12th in the npower Championship.

Hammill – who has been linked with a move to the Premier League – was at the heart of every Tykes move and the former Liverpool man netted the winner in the 13th minute.

The 22-year-old took his goal with aplomb and the playmaker was only denied more by a superb individual display from Pompey keeper Jamie Ashdown.

Robins was quick to praise Hammill as his team recorded a third consecutive win.

He said: "I thought Adam Hammill's goal was a great goal.

"He started the move off, got the ball played back to him and he tied himself up and smashed it in.

"He had a couple of other efforts. He's a talent and at the moment he's on fire.

"He's adding things to his game all the time – hopefully he will stay with us until he's ready to go somewhere else."

Robins was pleased with his team's battling qualities.

He added: "I am absolutely delighted with our performance today.

"It was a different game to last week – we showed some decent passing moves. This was a different performance; it was a strong battling performance."

Pompey manager Steve Cotterill felt his players did not do enough to earn a point.

The visitors struggled to create chances as the home side dominated the affair and Cotterill expressed frustration at his team's lack of cutting edge. He said: "We didn't do enough to score a goal. Our better opportunities came in the first half. We needed somebody to tap them in."
