Barnsley 3 Nottingham Forest 1: Robins delight at Tykes win

BARNSLEY manager Mark Robins felt his side got the reward they deserved for a week of hard work after beating Nottingham Forest at Oakwell.

Nathan Doyle gave the Tykes a fourth-minute lead and Andy Gray doubled the advantage.

Although Lewis McGugan raised Forest hopes of a comeback with a fine solo effort, substitute Jacob Butterfield struck a late third for the hosts.

Robins said: "I thought we were good. We've been good all week in training, sometimes when you're good in training it doesn't reflect on the pitch on Saturday.

"I was a little bit worried about the first passage of the game, then we stepped up our game. We got an early goal which settled us down. After the goal Forest had us under a lot of pressure because they're a good side, they've got players with pace and power.

"In the second half they put us under a lot of pressure with long balls and apart from their goal I thought we did particularly well. When they came back I made a few changes and Jacob Butterfield scored a good goal.

"I thought it was a good win because we have two difficult away games. We did very well and I am delighted."

On Doyle's first goal for Barnsley, Robins said: "He got himself in their penalty area and got on the end of it which is what he's been doing in training."

Gray's goal was his 100th in senior football and Robins added: "He works his socks off but sometimes he gets isolated and I've been asking him to be more aggressive. He has some technical things that need to be sorted out. Today he's put in a good performance. I didn't have a clue it was his 100th goal but I am delighted for him."

Forest assistant boss David Kelly said: "I am disappointed first and foremost. We worked hard all week at defending set-pieces and to lose a goal in the first five minutes was very disappointing. We had a few decent balls in the first half. In the second half I was disappointed to give a second goal away but I think we showed great character and resilience to get back in it.

"Lewis McGugan scored a fantastic goal. I thought there was only one team going to win it and we got caught by a sucker punch when we were pushing forward for an equaliser."

On the Barnsley penalty he added: "I would have been gutted if I was their manager and I hadn't got it."

Manager Billy Davies was forced to miss the match through illness, with Kelly explaining: "He's got a viral infection. He'll be back Monday."
