Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel satisfied with his options to face Walsall

“I think it was a good start from Mike,” said the Barnsley chief. “I spoke with him before the game and everything is new for him. He only had one day of training with the team so it is not easy but I think he played well.

“I know he can play better. He will help us this season, I have a lot of trust in him. I have known him for six years, I am happy he has come to Barnsley.

“He can play number six, number eight, number 10, on the wing, so he is very able in his positions. He is a good option.”

The opening group game of the Trophy out of the way, the focus at Oakwell can return to the season’s primary target of earning an instant return to the Championship.

Walsall are the visitors this weekend for a League One clash that will see Adam Davies and Kenny Dougall absent on international duty.

Another call-up in the Reds squad and the game could have been postponed but Stendel is happy with his options.

“It makes us think about the XI for the next game,” added the Barnsley head coach.

“Three or four players showed that they could play this Saturday.

“We have got injuries, players away on international duty, so it was good to see the fight.

“It makes it a difficult decision for Saturday.”
