Barnsley FC are the latest Yorkshire club to announce a positive Covid-19 case

BARNSLEY have confirmed that a member of their backroom staff tested positive for Covid-19 during testing on Friday.

The staff member, who is asymptomatic, is now self-isolating in line with EFL and government guidance.

A club statement read: "Barnsley FC can confirm that one person has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus following a round of testing on Friday 5 June.

"The single positive test is from an asymptomatic member of backroom staff who had tested negative in all four previous rounds.

"The individual will now follow the relevant guidance and undergo a period of isolation whilst remaining in close communication with club personnel, before being re-tested at a later date.

"Many have worked tirelessly to ensure that Oakwell remains a safe environment for players and staff alike. Barnsley FC will continue to follow EFL protocol and instruction.

"The staff member is safe and upbeat. No further comment will be made."

Barnsley are the fifth Yorkshire club to confirm a positive case for Coronavirus during rounds of testing at Championship clubs.

Back on May 24, Hull City confirmed two people at the club had tested positive for Coronavirus.

Six days later, Middlesbrough confirmed one positive test, with a member of staff at Sheffield Wednesday testing positive last Tuesday.

A day later, Huddersfield Town announced that a training ground support staff had also tested positive.

According to reports last week, Leeds United were responsible for “at least one” positive case in the Championship’s round of tests over last weekend.

Alongside the positive case at Barnsley, another indvidual at another Championship club also tested positive in the latest round of testing.

In the second-tier, 1,179 people were tested over the past four days.

There was one positive test in League Two, at Exeter, and none in League One. No positive results were recorded in the latest Premier League tests

More than 5,000 tests on players and staff have been carried out in the Championship since May 21, with 26 individuals testing positive.
