The 20-year-old has penned a deal which runs until the end of the season, with an option to extend to the summer of 2017 - and will provide competition in the middle of the park.

McCourt, who has previously had loan spells at Port Vale and Torquay United, said:”I’m delighted to join Barnsley. It’s a massive club and I can’t wait to get started.

“I want to help the club get to where it wants to be.

“I like tough tackling and to get on the ball and play football, so hopefully I can get started soon.”

The Liverpool-born midfielder will wear squad No 12 with the Reds and could make his debut in the game against Swindon at the County Ground tomorrow

Reds head coach Lee Johnson has had a busy few weeks, bringing in Manchester United loan striker Ashley Fletcher - who this week agreed a contract extension for the rest of the season - and also snapping up Preston midfielder Josh Brownhill for a month.

Defender Kevin Long also agreed a loan extension to the end of January a few weeks ago, while fellow loanee Lloyd Isgrove signed on the dotted line for the rest of the season - with Aidy White also agreeing terms for the rest of the season at the start of this month.
