The Reds could have moved within four points of the team occupying the final League One play-off place in Coventry City - whom they host next Tuesday - with victory at Gigg Lane, but had to settle for a point.

Heckingbottom, whose side kept their third clean sheet in four matches under him, said: “I think we have to be happy with it in the end, with the battling performance and the point and the clean sheet.

“At half-time, we wouldn’t have settled for a point. I thought we were the better team and wasted some good opportunities.

“We were disappointed it was nil-nil at half time and we expected more of the same. It turned into a bit of a battle and a war of attrition. We coped well with everything they threw at us.

“We battened down the hatches and made sure we got the point so we have to be pleased.

“I think some of the decisions made out there made it seem the game was more physical than it actually was. It stopped the flow of the game.”

The main talking point of the game saw talisman winger Adam Hammill dismissed for a tackle on ex-Reds player Danny Rose late on in proceedings, with Heckingbottom to review the incident.

He said: “We’ll have to look at it with Adam and the club and see what happens because we’re going to miss him for three games.

“He’ll be gutted if he has to miss the three games, as we will because he’s been a big part of our squad.”
