Barnsley will look to Adam Armstrong to capitalise on Sam Winnall's probable exit

The teenage forward, fit again following an ankle problem, recently re-signed on loan for the rest of the season.

He is ready to step up to the plate in the goalscoring department and help fill the void that will be caused by the impending move of Sam Winnall to Sheffield Wednesday.

The Newcastle United marksman is likely to be the main beneficiary of Winnall’s switch to the Owls, with the Geordie “raring to go” after being sidelined for most of December.

As it stands, Wednesday occupy the final Championship play-off berth and are just four points above the Reds.

Armstrong sees no reason why the club cannot continue their remarkable form of the last 12 months and push firmly for the top six.

He said: “Coming up from League One, no one expected us to be this high.

“We are that close now and we want to try and get there and everyone is giving 100 per cent in training and games and it is coming off.

“Hopefully, we can push on and reach the play-offs. If you don’t want to get to the top six, it is pointless playing football.

“You want to try and push yourself and get as high as you can and I think that is the aim for Barnsley.”

Admitting he had no hesitation in agreeing to stay on loan at Oakwell, the 19-year-old added: “A loan is all about getting experience and games and I am looking forward to doing that in the next four months again and it was a no-brainer to stay, really.

“We have started really well and there was no need to go back to Newcastle, with how well they are doing, and I don’t think they need anyone else.

“I am ready to kick on for the rest of the season.”
