Barnsley will not sell Done unless the price is right – Hill

BARNSLEY manager Keith Hill has fired a broadside in the direction of Championship rivals Crystal Palace, urging them to show some realism in their pursuit of Matt Done.

The Reds rejected a bid from the Eagles earlier this month with the Selhurst Park outfit rumoured to have tabled another offer this week.

That is understood to have fallen well below Barnsley’s valuation of the 24-year-old – reportedly at least £750,000 – and Hill, who is naturally keen to keep hold of his better players, confirmed that if the club decide to sell, it will only be for the right price.

Hill said: “Why should we strengthen our rivals’ hands? If we do that with the sale of Matty Done, it’s got to be right for the football club.

“Matty is fully in the picture and Crystal Palace can keep coming back... But there will be a price that – if it’s matched by them – probably will mean that he’s available.

“But that price has not been matched yet. Either start talking real sense or business or go and find somebody else because everyone is after left-footed players in offensive areas of the pitch who are quicker or as quick as Matty.”

Ironically, Done is currently out with a knee injury, after coming off early in last Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough, with Hill’s bid to bolster his midfield options by bringing in Doncaster Rovers ace James Coppinger on loan scuppered yesterday with the 31-year-old saying he was not interested in a move to Oakwell.

Hill was at least handed some good news yesterday with highly-rated teenage duo Paul Digby and John Stones signing new three-year deals, securing their future at Oakwell until 2015.

The club are also in talks with fellow starlets Jordan Clark and Danny Rose regarding new deals.

Full-back Stones’s fresh contract has completed a great week for the 18-year-old having been called up by England Under-19s for their friendly against Germany in Hamburg on September 6.

On Stones’s international honour, Hill added: “I’m really happy for John and in terms of the progress he’s making at the football club. It’s great when you see the type of foundation work and plan we envisage for the club starting to materialise.”

Sheffield Wednesday are waiting to hear back from Doncaster Rovers regarding their bid to sign Owls goalkeeper Nicky Weaver, with the League One club having as yet failed to follow up their initial interest.

Manager Dave Jones said: “They were after him and we’ve just waited and Nicky has said he’s not heard as yet. Whether it’s dead or not, I don’t know as I’ve not been told yet.”
