Blackpool 2 Middlesbrough 0: Double Pool defeat for Boro

MIDDLESBROUGH striker Scott McDonald missed a late penalty as Gordon Strachan's men bowed to defeat at Bloomfield Road to 10-man Blackpool.

Brett Ormerod scored the opener on the half-hour when he converted former Huddersfield Town player Gary Taylor-Fletcher's cross from close range for his seventh goal of the season.

McDonald, still looking for his first goal since joining from Celtic, was causing problems in the Blackpool rearguard.

First he volleyed wide from 25 yards before seeing an effort from a second chance well blocked by Ian Evatt.

Blackpool finished the half on top and Rob Edwards went close to doubling their lead but Danny Coyne produced a fine save.

Blackpool were reduced to 10 men in the 61st minute when another ex-Terrier Edwards saw red for hauling down McDonald.

Aliadiere went close to an equaliser three minutes later but Matthew Gilks was equal to the task, as he was again moments later when the French striker fired in a shot from 12 yards.

The Australian then had a great chance to level with seven minutes remaining but his penalty was saved by Gilks and Blackpool rubbed salt into Boro's wounds with a second goal in stoppage time through

DJ Campbell.

It brought to an end Boro's six-game unbeaten run while victory for Blackpool curtailed a five-game winless streak and moved them to within three points of the top six.
