Blackwell summoned by Sheffield United chairman McCabe

SHEFFIELD United manager Kevin Blackwell has flown to Belgium for talks with club chairman Kevin McCabe.

The Blades missed out on play-off qualification this season and McCabe has spoken of a need for change this summer at Bramall Lane.

Although Blackwell's future at the club is likely to be secure, McCabe publicly criticised his judgment in the transfer market last weekend along with the team's style of play.

Blackwell, who had previously been assistant to Neil Warnock, returned as manager in February 2008 following spells at Leeds United and Luton Town following the departure of Bryan Robson. He still has another two years on his contract .

Midfielder Nick Montgomery, meanwhile, has again rejected the offer of a new deal at Bramall Lane.

Montgomery, who will be out of contract this summer, is wanted by a host of clubs including Burnley, Middlesbrough, and Cardiff City.

The Leeds-born player was voted United's Player of the Year at the weekend but has been asked to take a hefty drop in wages.

"I didn't want my contract situation to come in the way of the bid to get in the play-offs," said Montgomery last night. "Now that we are no longer chasing promotion, we are talking again.

"If I am going to commit to the club, they have to commit to me," he stressed. "I am still only 28 and this next contract is important for myself and my family."

Striker Darius Henderson (hernia), midfielder Stephen Quinn (foot) and midfielder Lee Williamson (back) are all set to undergo operations this week with a view to being fit for the start of next season.
