Bournemouth v Huddersfield Town – Stability key for Terriers to realise maximum ambitions

Such is the speed in which games comes around in the Championship – every three or four days as it stands – that perceptions can change quickly.

Take Huddersfield Town for example.

They won once in seven matches from the end of October to the end of November and the conclusion that this was a team that might take a season to gel under the style of new head coach Carlos Corberan was a sensible one to reach.

However, three wins and a loss over the span of the next four games – over a timespan of just 11 days – flipped the perception entirely.

Two of those victories in the last seven days, against QPR and Sheffield Wednesday at the John Smith’s Stadium when they didn’t concede a goal, has suddenly elevated the Terriers to 12th place in the table. Cue the questions about whether the play-offs, just six points out of touch, are a realistic aim now for this season.

“The only thing we think about is being competitive in each game,” said Corberan, who is maturing as a manager at the same rate in which his players learn his style and approach.

“Every game is going to be a challenge, especially with our injuries.

“Our only focus is to recover very fast and get ready for the games. That is our only target.

“I honestly don’t look at tables.”

But are they at least ahead of where he expected they would be?

“We have found some stability with the style of play that we are developing,” responded the Spaniard.

“We have always said that consistency is going to be one of the keys to success this year.

“I think we have players that are ready to play with the same ideas.

“I think we have enough players to be able to compete with these numbers of games.

“What we have to keep on doing is demand the maximum out of ourselves.”

Maximum levels of performance, one would think, will be required today when Huddersfield visit Bournemouth, a club not long out of the Premier League and already lodging a strong case to make an instant return by sitting second.

Corberan added: “They are getting good results, but as always we will analyse how we can make something important in the game and knowing too that we are playing with one of the best teams in the league in terms of their style of play and the squad that they have.”
