Bradford City 1 Bury 0: Taylor declines offer to move to Newcastle

PETER TAYLOR has turned down the offer to be Alan Pardew's assistant at Newcastle United.

The Bantams manager was wanted by the Premier League club, who approached the City board and agreed a compensation figure just before the turn of the year.

Taylor, who has five months remaining on his deal at Valley Parade, then told joint-chairman Mark Lawn and Julian Rhodes that he wanted to stay at Valley Parade.

Lawn said: "Newcastle approached us between Christmas and New Year and we subsequently agreed compensation for the remainder of Peter's contract.

"But since then Peter has indicated he wants to stay and we hope that is the end of it."

Taylor celebrated his 58th birthday by watching Bradford gain their first double of the season with a narrow win over League Two play-off contenders Bury.

Victory came as the result of Omar Daley's superb right-foot volley from Tom Adeyemi's cross in first-half stoppage time.

Taylor said: "It could have been more, but on the other hand they had chances early on. We need to show more care with our finishing.

"The players will take confidence from the way they played in the second half.

"I wanted them to show more bottle and confidence and they did."
