Bradford footballer Richards dies, aged 36

The centre-half, who started his career at Valley Parade, passed away after a long battle against a serious illness. It is understood he was admitted to a hospice in Leeds earlier this week.

He initially retired in 2005 due to health reasons, but returned to the Bantams in 2007 as a part-time coach.

After leaving the Bantams, he went on to play for Tottenham, Southampton and Wolverhampton.

He played 86 times for City, scoring four goals, from 1992-95.

A statement from Bradford City read: “The football club are truly devastated to hear of the death of former Bradford City fans’ favourite Dean Richards.

“Bradford-born Richards passed away this morning at the age of only 36 following a long serious illness.

“Everyone at Bradford City would like to offer their deepest condolences to his friends and family during this tesing time.”
