Speight ends unhappy Bantams stay with Wrexham deal

BRADFORD CITY striker Jake Speight is today set to join Blue Square Premier side Wrexham after the two clubs agreed an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old has been at Valley Parade for just one season following a £25,000 switch from Mansfield Town.

Speight’s career at Bradford got off to a bad start when, just two weeks after leaving Field Mill, he was jailed for assault.

Once released, he went on to have a hugely disappointing season – netting just five goals in a Bantams shirt, three of which were penalties.

Speight also spent time on loan with Port Vale, where he scored once.

Wrexham manager Dean Saunders said: “He is a proven goalscorer. He will do well for us. We need players like him.”

New Bradford manager Peter Jackson was keen to get Speight out the door to free up wages for a striker with Crewe Alexandra’s Clayton Donaldson his main target.

Sheffield United manager Danny Wilson has appointed Frank Barlow as his assistant.

The 64-year-old, who hails from Mexborough, is a lifelong Blades fan and former player at Bramall Lane.

He said: “I suppose I have come full circle. There were two real pulls to take this job. The first is to work with Danny Wilson again, he is a top quality manager and a trustworthy man.

“The other (pull) was the opportunity to return to my first club.”

Barlow signed for United as a 14-year-old and went on to make 140 appearances before leaving in 1972.

He went on to spend the next eight years with Chesterfield before moving into coaching. His career has since included roles at Hull City, Nottingham Forest, Bristol City, Sheffield Wednesday and Wigan Athletic. Most recently, he has been working with Steve Bruce at Sunderland.

Palermo have rejected an offer from Tottenham to sign Uruguay international Abel Hernandez, according to the player’s agent.

Reports in Italy claimed the Barclays Premier League side had made a £8.9m bid to acquire the services of the 20-year-old forward.

Derby County have completed the signing of Kilmarnock midfielder Craig Bryson for an undisclosed fee.

Bryson, a Scotland international and captain of Kilmarnock last season, has signed a three-year contract and becomes Nigel Clough’s fourth summer signing following goalkeeper Frank Fielding and strike pair Jamie Ward and Theo Robinson.

Clough said: “It’s a tremendous signing for us and we’re delighted that Craig has chosen to come to Derby. He’s a leader on and off the field and has a tremendous hunger to improve.

“We’ve watched him in action repeatedly over the last six months and he has energy and ability in abundance. At age 24 he’s a player we see having a big impact both now and in the future.”

Bryson, who started 33 of Kilmarnock’s 38 league games last season, skippered the side to a sixth-placed finish. He made his full international debut in November against the Faroe Islands.

Sheffield Wednesday want centre half Danny Batth to return to Hillsborough on a season-long loan from Premier League Wolverhampton. The youngster ended the season on loan at the Owls and impressed manager Gary Megson.
