BRADFORD CITY joint-chairman Mark Lawn admits agents will have a big say in the club’s attempts to strengthen ahead of next season’s return to League One.

The Bantams, promoted via a 3-0 victory over Northampton Town in the play-off final, are determined to make an impact in the third tier after a six-year absence.

Key to that will be holding on to the players whose contracts are due to expire this summer.

Captain Gary Jones has already been tied down for another 12 months, while Bradford have also triggered an option to keep Kyel Reid beyond the expiry of his existing deal next month.

Bradford are understood to hold similar options with regard to Garry Thompson, Zavon Hines and Jon McLaughlin, while Andrew Davies and Nathan Doyle are two more of the Wembley line-up who, as it stands, will be free agents as of June 30.

Lawn said: “We will be looking to strengthen but, as ever, it is down to the agents. I have only been in this game for seven years, but agents run it more than we do. Trust me, they have the say on who goes and they put things in young lads’ heads.

“I won’t say which players, as it is unfair on them. But we have picked up two players this year because of agents basically promising them the world and then letting them down. Let’s hope that happens again for us.”

Jason Kennedy, the Rochdale midfielder whose proposed move to Valley Parade collapsed at the 11th hour in January, is expected to again be on City’s radar this summer when his own Spotland deal is due to run out.

One big fight Bradford seem to be in for this summer is warding off interest in Nahki Wells, their 26-goal top scorer. The Bermuda international has been watched by a host of clubs, including Huddersfield Town, and is expected to be the subject of heavy interest.

On the need to retain the key members of the squad who have just given Bradford their first promotion in 14 years, Lawn said: “We have got to try and keep these people and we will try our hardest to do that.”

Asked if he felt confident about keeping the squad together, Lawn added: “I don’t think any chairman is confident, if they are really honest.

“The one thing people get from me is honesty. We want to keep them.

“Whether they want to stay or not, I don’t know. We will make it as hard as we possibly can for them to move on.

“But if someone comes in from the Premier League for someone, what can we do realistically?

“What I will say is we should have a decent budget next year and I seriously think we might have a little dabble at the play-offs.”

Lawn, in common with the 24,000 Bradfordians who headed to Wembley on Saturday, has hailed the role played by Phil Parkinson in a season that brought not only promotion but also a first appearance in a major Cup final for more than a century.

On the challenges of the upcoming transfer window, the Bantams manager said: “You have got to be honest that with the exposure we have had this season, people will be watching our players. We accept that and I am ready to field the phone calls.”
