Yorkshire footballl round up (October 10): Hull City, Bradford City, Doncaster Rovers

JOE Dudgeon’s dreams of lining up for Northern Ireland for the first club have been torpedoed due to a knee problem.

The Hull City full-back has had an injection to cure the injury, which forced him to miss last weekend’s derby win at Hillsborough, with the 21-year-old now ruled out of the Northern Ireland squad for the World Cup qualifying clash with Portugal on Tuesday.

On Dudgeon, facing a fitness race to be fit for Hull’s next league clash against Ipswich on Saturday week, assistant-boss Steve Agnew said: “Joe’s had an injection to help the healing process and hopefully settle everything down.

“He should be available to step up his training in the next 10 days, but obviously that means he won’t be able to go away with Northern Ireland.”

We won’t panic - that’s the message from Sheffield Wednesday chairman Milan Mandaric following the Owls descent into the bottom three of the Championship after a horror run.

The international break has come at just the right time for the club, with Mandaric confident that the Owls fortunes will change if they remedy a few areas and continue to work hard.

He said: “When I first took over the club, we did not have a team to stay in League One,” he said.

“We changed the whole team and made it strong enough to get out of the division, and now we have gone up another level to the Championship. It is a big step up.

“We have brought in a lot of new players, and it has taken us a bit longer to gel. We have been punished for individual mistakes. But the manager and his staff are experienced and are working hard to eliminate these. There is nothing I would panic about.”

Both Bradford City and Doncaster Rovers are through to the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy northern area quarter-finals following victories last night, but York City bowed out after crashing 4-0 at home to Mark Robins’ Coventry City - with the performance leaving boss Gary Mills ‘gobsmacked.’

Penalty kings City saw off Hartlepool 6-5 in spot-kicks - their sixth successive shoot-out victory in the competition - after their tie ended goalless while a dream introduction to professional football for debutant sub Jordan Ball, who scored with his first touch after coming on seven minutes from time saw Rovers knock out holders Chesterfield 1-0 at the Keepmoat Stadium.
