Brentford oust Everton in penalty climax

Carling cupPREMIER League Everton earned extra time and then a shoot-out in their third-round tie at Brentford thanks to a second-half penalty save from Jan Mucha.

But League One Brentford ultimately prevailed 4-3 on penalties at Griffin Park to earn a surprise place in Saturday's fourth round draw.

Seamus Coleman scored his first Everton goal early in the first half before Gary Alexander's powerful header levelled things just before the break.

Coleman gave away a spot-kick just before the hour but stand-in goalkeeper Mucha saved.

Owen Coyle endured a miserable return to Burnley as Wade Elliott's first-half goal sent Bolton crashing out.

On his first appearance back at Turf Moor since making his controversial switch across Lancashire in January, Coyle was demonised from first minute to last. And his team lost as well, courtesy of the man whose goal at Wembley took Burnley – and Coyle – into the Premier League 17 months ago.

Samir Nasri scored two penalties in extra time as Arsenal overcame North London rivals Tottenham 4-1 at White Hart Lane, with Andrey Arshavin completing the scoring..

Kevin Doyle spared Wolves' blushes with an extra-time double against Notts County at Molineux. Former West Brom striker Lee Hughes broke the deadlock but Nenad Milijas equalised from the spot after County defender Liam Chilvers was sent off for bringing down Christophe Berra.

Substitutes Steven Fletcher and Doyle settled the tie in the first period of extra-time. Kevin Smith scored a late consolation before Doyle struck again in the last minute.

Headers from Danny Higginbotham and Kenwyne Jones secured Stoke victory over Fulham at the Britannia Stadium.

Birmingham breezed through as three quickfire goals from Alexander Hleb, Nikola Zigic and Craig Gardner all but saw off MK Dons before half-time. However, League One Dons deservedly bagged a late consolation through substitute Aaron Wilbraham.

Tamas Priskin and Gareth McAuley fired Ipswich into round four, 2-1 at Millwall.

Swansea defeated Peterborough 3-1 away with a hat-trick from former Chelsea winger Scott Sinclair. Victor Obinna gave West Ham a 2-1 win at Sunderland and Leicester triumphed by the same score away to 10-man Portsmouth.
