Bristol City v Barnsley: Teenager is encouraged to back his talent with confidence

REUBEN Noble-Lazarus has been challenged by Barnsley manager Mark Robins to show more desire and belief.

The teenager became the youngest player in Football League history last season when making his debut for the Tykes against Ipswich Town aged 15 years and 45 days.

He returned to the spotlight, after an absence of 17 months, when coming on as a substitute against Ipswich last weekend.

Speaking ahead of tonight's trip to Bristol City, Robins insisted that the midfielder may still have a big future in the game but also highlighted areas for improvement.

"A lot depends on Reuben and how much he wants it," said Robins. "He is still very young and he needs to keep developing. It will be a test of character.

"On Saturday, he didn't look out of place but there is more in there to come. When he starts getting that belief he could come through. We have to find about players but we have got to be careful and only put him in when the time is right."

The Huddersfield-born 16-year-old signed his first professional contract with Barnsley last summer after spending a short period on trial at Manchester United. It does not expire until the end of next season.

With Adam Hammill again missing due to injury, Noble-Lazarus could be on the bench again tonight at Ashton Gate.

Defender Bobby Hassell has recovered from a wrist injury suffered at Ipswich and the Tykes are also boosted by the return of fit-again Rob Kozluk.

"We have to be ready to pick up as many points as we can between now and the end of the season," said Robins, whose side are still chasing the possibility of play-off qualification.

"We can never rest on our laurels."
