Bristol City v Hull City: Shota Arveladze demands more desire from George Moncur

You might think it was a good thing that George Moncur is “a great lad, always smiling – a good kid” but his Hull City manager Shota Arveladze wishes he was more of a pain in the backside.

The midfielder has not played since mid-February, or started a game since October. That seems unlikely to change at Bristol City today.

Arveladze wishes he would make more of a fuss about that.

“I want them to be happy but he’s too easy-going,” he says of the 28-year-old who has made just seven Championship starts in an injury-disrupted first season in East Yorkshire.

“I really like George as a football player, he’s a great lad, always smiling – a good kid,” says his manager.

“He’s someone who gives you pleasure to be around a football field.

“The only thing I’m not happy about with him is he’s too happy with his position – he’s not playing. He doesn’t get mad, angry, or want to change things.

“He never comes to ask to play 90 minutes in the second team. I would be saying, ‘Listen gaffer, I play 10 minutes here, 15 minutes there, I’m a football player, I want to play 90 minutes so can I go there and play?’

“He’s a player you want to have because he can decide things, very skilful. It’s a pity he doesn’t see his own quality.

“I’ve told him if you’re not happy, challenge us, get more from us. But probably he’s happy.”

That does not sit easily with Arveladze, who again has a fully-fit squad to choose from for the final away game of the campaign.

“When you’re comfortable you don’t change anything in your life but you should be looking and asking to get more and more,” argues the Georgian.

“He can dribble, he can take an extra touch, he can score, he’s quick but sometimes it looks like it’s too easy for him to stay out (of the team).

“I’m trying to explain this to him.

“When you don’t play for three months you just want to play for 90 minutes and it’s tough. This is what I’m telling him every five, six or seven days or chatting to him during a session.

“Why not say I want to play in every U23 home game at least? You come and watch and I’ll have the minutes in my pocket. Then I can think, ‘Wow! This boy wants to show what he can do.’

“He’s great in the (training) sessions but it’s not about the sessions.”

Victory will move Hull above the 17th-placed Robins with a match to play.
