Carlisle United v Doncaster Rovers – Consistency critical for youngsters to progress under Darren Moore

There is a pay-off to the way Darren Moore has built his squad at Doncaster Rovers: inconsistency.

The squad is not without experience but there are also plenty of youngsters, many on loan from Premier League clubs. To get that talent to the Keepmoat, Moore has had to swallow the fact they are not yet the stage where they can churn out performances.

“We understand that, but I have a desire to get them ready and show that they can perform,” he said. “They have to learn about consistency.

“From pre-season we’ve been working towards that.”

Tuesday night showed both sides of the coin, off-colour and trailing 2-0 at half-time to in-form Blackpool, then putting their foot down and powering to a 3-2 win. Tomorrow’s FA Cup tie at Brunton Park will test them again, demanding they do not let their standards drop against League Two Carlisle United.

“You can only hope they learn from it (Tuesday) and I’m sure they will, not just for here at Doncaster, but for their careers,” said Moore.

“It’s a good ingredient to have to not know you’re beaten and to stay in the game for however long the referee plays.”

The second round puts teams in sight of the glamour ties which could await in January, but Carlisle are sixth in League Two and showing good signs under manager Chris Beech.

“There’s no mentality change, it’s the same detail, same respect, same preparation,” insisted Moore.

“We’re going to have to be at our best up there to come away with anything.

“When you’ve been in the industry the time I have you’ve just got to consistently prepare and leave all the excitement to you guys (in the media).”
