Clarets culprit backed against Town

Tarkowski has been a solid performer for the Clarets since being asked to fill £25m Michael Keane’s shoes in defence and was rewarded with the captaincy against Leeds on Tuesday night. But his big day ended in disappointment as he gave away a stoppage-time spot-kick in the 2-2 draw and then missed from 12 yards in the shootout, which the Premier League side lost 5-3.

Lowton revealed the centre-half took some consoling in the aftermath of the third-round tie, but is sure he will react well against Huddersfield.

“He was down in the dressing room and felt as though he had let the lads down,” said Lowton.

“But people got around him and said he had shown the courage to step up and take a penalty. Since the start of the season, he has been fantastic and the lads just tried to tell him how good he’s been.

“He’s not tried anything silly. He’s just unfortunate that the keeper guessed the right way and saved it. But he’s been all right and I think he will be fine.”

Since winning promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs Huddersfield have been compared to Burnley, in terms of commitment, cohesion and the ability to surpass modest expectations.

Both teams were among the favourites to go down at the start of the campaign but sit sixth and seventh, respectively, having taken eight points apiece from their first five outings.

“They are probably the side most similar to us,” said Lowton.

“It seems like they work hard for each other, having watched the clips. It looks from the outside that everyone is working hard.

“It will be a hard-working game. They work their socks off together and it just proves that works.”
