De Gea fails to make it across to Madrid and Berahino stays with the Baggies

The amount spent by Premier League clubs during the summer window passed £800m on the final day of trading, but most of the talk centred around two deals that did not happen.

De Gea’s long-anticipated £29m move from Manchester United to Real Madrid collapsed on Monday night and the clubs appeared at odds over who was to blame.

West Brom striker Berahino, meanwhile, hit out after the Baggies blocked Tottenham’s attempts to sign him.

Berahino appeared to threaten never to play for the club again after two deadline-day bids from Spurs were rejected.

De Gea remained at Old Trafford after the paperwork for his switch to the Bernabeu, which would have included Keylor Navas moving in the opposite direction, was not submitted before Spain’s deadline of 11pm on Monday.

Real issued a strong statement defending their conduct, insisting they did “everything necessary” to implement the move. This came after United said they had submitted their paperwork on time and had proof of so doing.

Real could have the option to appeal to La Liga or world governing body FIFA, but that seems unlikely. They may now have to to wait until January at the earliest to move again for a player they have been linked with all summer.

Berahino took to Twitter to criticise Baggies’ chairman Jeremy Peace after Spurs were rebuffed in their late attempts to take the 22-year-old to White Hart Lane.

Spurs twice failed with bids last month, the second of which would have been worth up to £21m, but it is understood their latest two offers represented only a marginal improvement.

Berahino tweeted: “’Sad how i cant say exactly how the club has treated me but i can officially say i will never play Jeremy Peace.’’

United did not officially respond to Real’s statement as they focused on completing their remarkable £36m deal for 19-year-old France Under-21 striker Anthony Martial from Monaco. The fee for the highly-rated but relatively unproven prospect, who signed a four-year contract, represents a world record for a teenager.

There were plenty of other deals concluded with West Ham one of the busiest clubs.

The Hammers began the day by confirming the return of midfielder Alex Song for a second season on loan from Barcelona before they captured Chelsea winger Victor Moses, also on a season-long loan.

The club then announced permanent deals for striker Nikica Jelavic from Hull City and former Sheffield Wednesday winger Michail Antonio from Nottingham Forest.

Chelsea completed a deal for Senegal defender Papy Djilobodji from Nantes. The fee was reported to be around £2.2m.

A deal was also agreed for Reading defender Michael Hector, but he was immediately loaned back to the Royals.

Everton confirmed a deal for Ramiro Funes Mori from River Plate for £9.5m.

Southampton announced the signing of defender Virgil van Dijk from Celtic on a five-year deal for a reported fee of £11.5m while Bournemouth landed striker Glenn Murray from Crystal Palace. Joleon Lescott moved from West Brom to Aston Villa for a reported £2m.

QPR striker Charlie Austin, linked with a number of clubs including Manchester United, is staying at Loftus Road and Jon Walters, who handed in a transfer request, remains with Stoke.
