Defensive duo’s chance to nullify Hornets’ sting

The defensive duo have been waiting patiently for their opportunity under the returning Oakwell chief, which has now seemingly arrived in the heart of the Reds’ back four.

With captain Martin Cranie out for three weeks with a hamstring tear and Peter Ramage also struggling with a similar problem and doubtful for today’s clash at Watford, both summer arrivals are likely to line up at Vicarage Road.

Wilson has revealed he is not looking to the loan market for answers, mindful he has two players “in house” who will hopefully do the job.

Wilson, still awaiting his first away win in his second spell in charge of the Reds, said: “We have got two players in there who are in the club for a reason with Lewin and big Jean.

“They have just not played games in recent months because the two centre-backs (Cranie and Ramage) have done very well.

“But sometimes, you have got to step up to the plate and they will be given their opportunity. That’s a certainty in that respect and I am sure they will give it everything and step up to the plate.

“It’s a great opportunity for them. You hear that many times in clichés which managers say when there are injuries and suspensions and this is one of those situations.

“They have been chomping at the bit to play and saying they want to play; now is their opportunity if they want to perform.

“We are full of confidence in them. We are going to a tough place on Saturday, but you name me an easy one to go to in this league; I don’t think there’s any.”

Bobby Hassell is nowhere nearer to a return from a calf injury, with Marcus Pedersen also remaining on the sidelines. Jim O’Brien, meanwhile, has been ruled out for the season with a knee injury.

Watford won 5-1 at Oakwell in September.
