Delph and Rose called in under Rooney as captain

YORKSHIREMEN Fabian Delph and Danny Rose have been called up to England’s senior squad for the first time ahead of next month’s games against Norway and Switzerland.

The pair are among four uncapped players named by manager Roy Hodgson, who has appointed, as expected, Wayne Rooney as his new captain after the international retirement of Steven Gerrard.

Aston Villa midfielder Delph and Tottenham Hotspur left-back Rose, both 24, are joined by Arsenal defender Calum Chambers and Newcastle’s Jack Colback in the 22-man squad.

Also included are ex-Barnsley defender Jack Stones, on standby for the World Cup, with the Everton player one of five White Rose-born players – the others being Gary Cahill, James Milner, Delph and Rose, the latter three all starting their careers at Leeds.

Hodgson made a check to watch Bradford-born Delph in Villa’s 0-0 draw with Newcastle last Saturday, with his call-up fully deserved according to Villa chief Paul Lambert, who feels the schemer was unlucky not to be called up at the start of 2013-14.

Hodgson, whose side host Norway in a Wembley friendly on Wednesday and visit Switzerland in their opening Euro 2016 qualifier in Basel on Monday week, said: “I was impressed with him on Saturday and with the reports of his first game of the season for Villa.

“He benefits that in an area where we felt we were very strong, with Gerrard and Lampard now out of the equation, people like Delph and Colback can see the opportunity and they are still very inexperienced players.”

Rose, who hails from Doncaster, has been brought in to understudy Leighton Baines, with Luke Shaw out injured.

Meanwhile, Rooney has spoken of his pride at becoming captain on a permanent basis and admits it will be a special moment when he leads out his country at Wembley for the first time as full-time skipper.

He said: “Obviously I will have many personal proud moments playing for England and none more so than when I walk out at Wembley for the first time as the manager’s appointed captain, but collectively we want to be known as winners as all professional footballers.”
