Doncaster Rovers 2 West Bromwich Albion 3: O'Driscoll lauds West Brom's fine achievement but laments the lack of reward for Doncaster

Doncaster Rovers' manager Sean O'Driscoll paid tribute to West Bromwich Albion after this result, which confirmed the visitors' elevation back into the Premier League.

But he felt his side, who were prompted by excellent displays from James Hayter and John Oster, should have got something from the game.

He said: "They and Newcastle have been the outstanding teams in the division. They are Premier League clubs and everyone has wanted to beat them.

"Over the course of the season they have been more consistent than anyone else and you have to give them a lot of credit.

"Today, they had two shots and we were two goals down; they have quality where it matters and there is not much you can do about that.

"It was a great free-kick and a schoolboy error from someone as experienced as James Chambers. But our application was first class as it is difficult when you are 2-0 down at half-time."

Graham Dorrans fired a glorious free-kick past Neil Sullivan to give the Baggies the lead after 30 minutes before Chris Brunt seized on a poor defensive header by former West Brom player Chambers to double their advantage in first-half stoppage time.

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas responded for Doncaster in the 47th minute but Roman Bednar's 73rd-minute strike re-established West Brom's lead.

Hayter did pull one goal back late on for Rovers and the visitors endured a frantic final few minutes before securing their return to the top flight.

West Brom manager Roberto Di Matteo paid tribute to his side's fighting qualities as they held on for victory.

"This is probably the highlight of my career, an achievement based on the last two years of hard work," he said.

"We conceded that second goal late on and we were hanging on the last few minutes but we showed tremendous resilience to win the game away from home, where we have had such a good record this season, and it was a good three points."

He added: "It's a credit to the players who have worked very hard. Their attitude, effort has been the key to this season and we have been promoted with three games left. It's an amazing achievement.

"It has been great to work with these players this year and I have enjoyed it very much. As a manager you need good players, players who are willing to put in the effort through the season.

"It's different to what I achieved when I was a player, but as a manager promotion is a good thing to have on your track record."
