Doncaster Rovers face most critical examination of Gary McSheffrey era against Swindon

DONCASTER ROVERS arguably face their biggest test during the era of Gary McSheffrey this afternoon - a good examination all the same.

Rovers enjoyed an uplifting opening month of the new season - just what the doctor ordered after last season's ailments.

Unfortunately, back-to-back defeats - compounded by poor and disappointing performances against Barrow and Mansfield Town respectively - have taken some of the shine off that.

As a result, seventh-placed Doncaster, by McSheffrey's own admission, find themselves at a bit of a crossroads and the Rovers chief should find out a bit more about his players come 5pm on Saturday following a couple of losses in the last two matches.

He is mindful to the concept that sometimes an early-season setback or two can have a silver lining if players learn from it fast.

After some critical words in their direction already this week, McSheffrey is seeking some answers from his charges in the here and now.

McSheffrey said: "At the minute we are bordering where we should be with our performance levels. We want a response and to try and get on the winning run again.

"The lads have to be mentally strong to make sure fear does not creep in and a lack of confidence.

"We have got some real men in the dressing room who have played a lot of games. Sometimes, you just need that little eye-opener to the level and to what you are actually playing against.

"It has probably shocked a few of our players and a wake-up call and realisation that no game is going to be easy and if you perform to that standard, you are not going to keep your shirt. That goes for anyone.
