Amond now on Megson’s radar after Mellor deal fades away

Sheffield Wednesday manager Gary Megson is running the rule over Irish striker Padraig Amond.

Megson turned his attention to Amond after the Owls failed to agree terms with Preston striker Neil Mellor and had a bid rejected for Rochdale’s Chris O’Grady.

Amond, 23, has arrived on trial from Portuguese Premier League side Pacos de Ferreira.

He is a former Republic of Ireland under-21 international whose previous clubs include Shamrock Rovers, Sligo Rovers and Kildare County.

Doncaster Rovers are hoping to re-sign midfielder Ryan Mason on a season-long loan from Tottenham Hotspur.

Mason, 20, played 15 games for Rovers last season before returning to White Hart Lane.

Rovers manager Sean O’Driscoll said: “He’s in the last year of his contract and, unless he signs a new deal, they would like to see him go out and play more games in the Championship.”

The England Under-20 international is currently away on tour with Spurs, but O’Driscoll hopes to complete the deal on his return.

n Carlos Tevez will “respect” Manchester City if he ultimately fails to secure his desired move away from the club this summer, according to his agent Kia Joorabchian.

Tevez yesterday saw a proposed move to Corinthians fall through, but Joorabchian said that, while his client was keen to move, he would not cause City problems.

“I think Carlos is a very calm person,” said Joorabchian.

“He’s neither disappointed nor happy. He’s very calm.”

Brazilian striker Jo, meanwhile, has left City to join Internacional in his homeland.

The 24-year-old was briefly City’s record signing when he joined from CSKA Moscow in 2008 for a fee of around £18m, although he was swiftly overtaken in that regard by his countryman Robinho later the same summer.

However, despite the high expectations, Jo never adapted to life in the Premier League, and scored only six goals in 41 games for City.
