The Scot takes Rovers to League Two leaders Burton Albion tonight for a game that will pit him against former Leicester City team-mate Gary Rowett.

Fresh from Saturday’s timely victory in League One at Scunthorpe United, Dickov said: “We want to do well in this competition. We spoke to the players in the morning and asked how many had been to Wembley. They all put their hands up.

“So, I said, ‘Not as a fan, to play’. There were three or four of them. I was lucky enough to do it and it is a fantastic experience and one day you do not forget.

“It (getting to Wembley) is realistic to teams in our division so we will give everything we can to get there. It won’t, though, be easy. We have a really tough game in Burton and every club in this competition will have the same aspirations as us.”

Yorkshire clubs have a pretty poor record in a competition that started life in 1983 as the Associate Members’ Cup with just two victories in the final.

Doncaster are one of those to triumph having lifted the Trophy in 2007 against Bristol Rovers.

Dickov added: “If you offered any set of fans a chance to go to Wembley in a season, they would snap your hands off. It brings a feel-good factor so this is a big game for us.

“Burton are a good team. We have had them watched a few times. I know they lost at the weekend but they have already beaten QPR and Wigan in the Cups this season. Gary Rowett is an ex-team-mate of mine and has done a great job.”
