Doncaster Rovers 2 Stalybridge Celtic 0: More to come from my Rovers – Ferguson

Doncaster Rovers secured their place in tonight’s FA Cup second round draw, but only after some harsh words from manager Darren Ferguson.

Andy Williams gave Rovers the lead after three minutes but they laboured against non-league opposition at the Keepmoat.

Rovers improved after the break though, and Williams added a second to make sure their name is in the hat tonight.

“I had a few words with them at half time because the tempo wasn’t quick enough,” Ferguson said.

“We asked for a good start and we got a great one with a good early goal.

“But I think that hindered us because after that we got a bit sloppy. You know what it’s like when there’s only one goal in it. You don’t want it to get edgy.

“The second goal clearly helped us and in the second half we were better. We did the simple things better, like keeping the ball.

“It wasn’t horrendous. It wasn’t a bad performance but it needed to be improved.”

Ferguson insists Rovers remain a work in progress and are not close to the levels he wants to take them to in the coming months.

But he says he is delighted with the progress made since he took charge last month.

“Were no where near where we need to be, he said.

“Thats not a criticism because I have to say in the short time I have been here, the players have been fantastic.”
