Doncaster Rovers: Rovers in the mix to sign Vale striker Pope - but likely to face fierce competition

The former Rotherham United targetman is out of contract next month and has been offered a new deal by Vale.

The 29-year-old is expected to hold talks with Rovers this week with Vale chairman Norman Smurthwaite having stated that the Stoke-born player will have to take a wage cut to stay in Burslem where he was on an “exceptionally good contract” according to the Vale Park supremo.

Pope was on the wanted list of Barnsley last autumn and at the start of the new year and also linked with Millwall last season.

The successful signing of the frontman, who has hit 61 goals in three seasons in the Potteries for his boyhood club, would represent a considerable financial commitment for Rovers, who are expected to have to ward off plenty of other interest in the forward.

On his own future, Pope said: “I haven’t discussed terms yet, that’s in the post but Rob Page has said he wants me to stay so the club will put something to me in writing.

So, it will be a case getting that then sitting down with my family and my agent and then going back with the club to negotiate.

“Hopefully something can be sorted out.

“Why would I want to leave? I live half a mile from the ground, it’s my club and there is a great group there.

“But just because I am a local lad and support the club doesn’t mean I am going to be happy to stay whatever is offered.

“I am nearly 30 and I have to do what is right for myself and my family.

“Hopefully we can meet half way or I can get an agreement with the chairman, but we will have to see what comes through the post.”
