The 28-year-old defender stepped in at Hillsborough for his first start in a Rovers shirt since the opening day of the Championship season.

He helped Doncaster keep a clean sheet as their stubborn defence thwarted Sheffield Wednesday to enable Rovers to pick up a welcome three points.

Now the Scotsman – signed on a free transfer from Cardiff City 12 months ago – is hoping he has impressed enough to keep Reece Wabara out of the side when they return to Keepmoat Stadium action tonight.

Manchester City loanee Wabara missed the Owls game with an injured toe, but is back in contention to face Burnley tonight. It leaves Dickov with some tough decisions to make. “Our back four and goalkeeper were magnificent (at Hillsborough),” he said.

“We inherited a spirit and you have to give credit to the lads who have come in. They have bought into that, and that was a big thing for me in the recruitment of players, to add to the fantastic spirit that was already there.

“We do our homework, due dilligence, not only on a player’s ability, but what they are like attitude-wise. Federico Macheda, from Manchester United, scored the goal (against Wednesday), he didn’t have the best of games, but he did work hard for his team and team-mates.

“Reece is getting better all the time. He will have a chance (tonight), but Paul Quinn has made it really hard for me to leave him out.

“Talking about that spirit that we have got, from not playing since the first game of the season Quinny came in and to put in a defensive performance like that was top class.”

Quinn’s only other action since that 3-1 opening-day defeat to Blackpool came in three substitute appearances.

Burnley midfielder Dean Marney is suspended, and Ross Wallace (knee) is still out.
