Doncaster v Bury: Marathon not a sprint is Williams goal vow

The 28-year-old striker was one of League One’s hottest marksmen last season, firing home 22 goals for Swindon Town.

That saw the Wiltshire club beat Sheffield United to reach the play-off final, and Rovers pulled off a huge coup by luring out-of-contract Williams north to the Keepmoat Stadium on a three-year deal this summer.

Rovers open up against Bury today, but Williams is hoping Rovers supporters will give him time to settle in.

When he joined Swindon in 2012 it took him nine games to open his account, finishing the season with 12 goals.

“I can only ask the fans to be patient, it might not come on the first day, a hat-trick on the opening day of the season doesn’t usually happen,” he said.

“It took me nine games to get up and running at Swindon when I first joined, last season I was a bit quicker.

“But as a striker I just back my ability that I can score enough goals and hopefully win them over.

“I haven’t come here to sit around in mid-table, I want to get promoted and get out of this league.”

Williams is excited to be working with manager Paul Dickov, a former striker himself.

“It’s fun learning from someone who has played and scored at the highest level, like the gaffer has,” he said.

“I am always learning and listening from different people. I think I have learned more towards the back end of my career, than I did at the start.

Dickov admits he knows his starting line-up today. “We’ve got a fully fit squad to pick from which is great, which gives me a little headache,” he said.
