Flynn has two games to advance his case at Doncaster

Such has been the number of applicants for the post at the League One high-fliers, John Ryan and the board want to take their time over the appointment.

St Johnstone manager Steve Lomas and former Barnsley and Rotherham boss Mark Robins, who only recently took charge of Rovers’ League One rivals Coventry City, are both among the bookmakers’ favourites. Glynn Snodin has also been linked.

In the meantime, caretaker manager Brian Flynn has two games to stake his claim for the coveted position.

The vastly-experienced 57-year-old is yet to put his name forward, but would be open to taking on the job were he to strengthen Doncaster’s position in the promotion race over the next 10 days.

“Of course I would be interested, should the right situation arise,” said Flynn, the former Wrexham and Wales Under-21s manager.

“But there are some damn good managers not in work who would be very interested in this position.

“Doncaster need a manager who can keep the continuity going. The players know their jobs. If someone comes in and wants to tweak it even slightly that could upset the rhythm they’re in. Fifty points from 26 games is a hell of a position to come into.”

Despite the opportunity, Flynn – who was brought in by Dean Saunders in August as an advance scout – is not looking beyond tomorrow’s trip to promotion rivals Stevenage.

“I’m only looking one game ahead because who knows what can happen in football,” said Flynn, who is being assisted by Rovers captain Rob Jones.

“I was talking to my old room-mate at Leeds, Paul Hart, who was appointed caretaker manager of Leeds and looking forward to the game on the Saturday when George Graham took over.

“He was only caretaker for two days. So I can’t look beyond Saturday.”

Regardless of who is chosen to succeed Saunders, Ryan wants the club to win League One this season, a feat that Flynn believes is well within their capabilities.

Flynn said: “The chairman addressed the staff and not only does he want promotion but he wants to win the league.

“I’ve seen every team in this league and I believe we are the best.”
