Rovers winger Cotterill rewarded for Keepmoat graft by Wales call – Dickov

Cotterill – who last played for his national team in May 2011 – has been drafted in by Wales manager Chris Coleman after several players, including Gareth Bale, were ruled out.

Wales face their final two World Cup qualifiers, hosting Macedonia in Cardiff tomorrow before travelling to Group A leaders Belgium next Tuesday.

“I’m delighted for Cotts (Cotterill) because he has not been part of the international set up for Wales for a while,” said Dickov.

“He has been working so hard for the team here and although tactically he has been in and out of the team, this will give him a big boost.

“They must think a lot about David because they have some good players and he is getting his chance to stake a claim to a place with the squad.”

Cotterill, 25, is one of six Doncaster players away on international duty this week, something of a double-edged sword for Dickov. On the one hand, it’s credit to Doncaster’s fine start to the Championship season, but it also leaves Rovers short of numbers and players at risk of picking up injuries while away. Rovers next game is away at Reading on October 19.

“I have six players going on international duty which is a great honour but also a worry because they are away from us and you have no control over them,” said Dickov, who has already lost on-loan Federico Macheda after the striker returned to parent club Manchester United with a hamstring injury.

“They are playing games that are out of our control but it is fantastic recognition for the club and the player. The more you get out there on international duty means that we must be doing things right at this end.”
